The Ferrycarrig 5 Mile has been held and that means a new year has begun, but perhaps they were following the Chinese calendar and not the Irish one as we’re a few weeks later this year. Despite the different date we still saw the same level of athleticism and skill that we’ve come to expect from our Striders team at road races.
Brendan Lyng was the first Strider home, coming 7th overall, and first over 50. Next came Tomas Harrington and Adam and Alan O’Connor, the three of them in a row, 10th, 11th and 12th respectfully. Pat O’Callaghan came next, 3rd over 50. Next came Luca O’Connor, Bob Crosbie and Michael O'Gorman. Luca bagged the Junior prize, while Bob and Mick both finished strong. Sean Meaney came next, finishing strong in his first Ferrycarrig. Mark Curtis had a great run, enduring throughout the race.
The women’s team were quite successful, with Beth O’Connor and Lorraine Harrington coming in together. Catherine Redmond came next, with Bernie Cashin not far behind. Both Catherine and Bernie had stellar runs, the two of them came first and second in the women over 60 category. We can’t forget about the amazing efforts of Emma Mooney and Aoife Lyng both hurtling through the race. Yvonne O’Connor, Ann Marie Walsh and Marina Byrne all had super runs, persevering through the rain and hills. We should really give a hand to the whole women’s team, but especially Beth, Lorraine and Catherine who won 1st in the ladies team category.
Overall, another successful outing for the Striders. We should take a chance to congratulate all who participated and to thank all those involved with the organisation of this race, which is a staple of the annual road race calendar.
Thanks to Tony Crosbie, Eugene Cashin and independent.ie for photos.
